Sensor range and output

The Wenglor WM03NCT2 is an NPN photoelectric sensor with a working range of 12...18 mm and a nominal distance of 15 mm. It suits automation engineers who need reliable presence detection at close range. The sensor resolves 20 gray-scale steps and switches at up to 5 kHz with a 100 µs response time. Its white-light source covers 400...700 nm and produces a 1,5 × 2,5 mm light spot at the target.

Mounting and wiring needs

The red plastic housing is fully encapsulated and rated IP67, so it withstands wash-down and dust without extra sealing. A 10...30 V DC supply drawing under 30 mA at 24 V powers the unit, while short-circuit, reverse-polarity and overload protection guard the output. Connection is made through a standard M12 × 1, 4-pin plug, and the teach-in button can be locked to prevent accidental re-configuration. No separate amplifier or controller is required.

Detection headroom and limits

The sensor handles ambient light up to 10 000 lux and keeps temperature drift below 2 % across -25...60 °C, giving stable switching in typical indoor and sheltered outdoor installations. Service life is rated at 100 000 hours at 25 °C, and the MTTFd figure of 2164 years supports safety-related designs. Builders who need longer sensing distances, analogue output or faster serial communication than the optional RS-232 adapter provides will have to choose a different device.
