BUCIER SFF-8087 to 4x SFF-8482 SAS breakout cable .5 m with SATA power

Connection and purpose

This BUCIER breakout cable links an internal Mini-SAS SFF-8087 port on a RAID or PCIe controller to four SATA hard drives. Each of the four branches ends in an SFF-8482 29-pin connector that carries both data and a 15-pin SATA power socket, so a separate drive power lead is required for every disk. The assembly measures .5 m and uses a nylon-braided ribbon to keep the four runs tidy in confined chassis space.

Suitable builds and limits

The cable suits builders connecting SATA disks to a controller or motherboard Mini-SAS port in servers, workstations or DIY systems where the four labelled branches P1 to P4 simplify routing. It will not work with SAS drives, and the SFF-8087 end must not be plugged into a backplane. Buyers needing direct SAS drive attachment or backplane connectivity should look at a different cable type.

Throughput and headroom

The link supports 6 Gb/s data transfer rates per lane, matching the SATA 6 Gb/s ceiling of the attached drives. Four concurrent SATA disks can therefore run at their native interface speed without bottleneck from the breakout itself. Performance will be limited by the slowest disk in the array and by the controller’s own queue depth, not by the cable.
