The Nest Cam (Wired) second generation is an indoor IP camera that uses on-device intelligence to distinguish people, animals and vehicles. It streams 1080p HDR video with night vision to the Google Home app and provides up to three hours of free event history. A Google Account is required and the camera works only with the Google Home app, not the legacy Nest app.

The camera requires a working Wi-Fi connection and internet access for live streaming, mobile alerts and remote viewing. If Wi-Fi drops, the device can store up to one hour of recorded events locally. Familiar face alerts and up to 60 days of video history need a separate Nest Aware subscription. Buyers who need continuous 24/7 recording or local-only operation without cloud services should look elsewhere.

Person, animal and vehicle classification runs on the camera itself, so notification speed does not depend on cloud round-trips when motion is frequent. Local storage holds one hour of events if the network goes down, preventing gaps in the timeline. Continuous wired power ensures the processor and radio stay active without battery management throttling during long monitoring periods.
