What it is

This Monoprice 144335 speaker wire uses 14AWG pure bare copper conductors rated at greater than 99.95% purity. The 250-foot spool provides four conductors inside a white CL3-rated jacket suitable for in-wall installation. Colour-coded PVC insulation on each conductor simplifies polarity identification during long runs. It is designed for home audio systems that demand low resistance over distance.

When to upgrade

Copper-clad aluminum wire is only about 68% as conductive as pure bare copper, adding resistance that can alter speaker impedance and degrade sound. If your existing cable is CCA or a thinner gauge, this wire reduces that loss and keeps the amplifier load closer to the speaker's impedance curve. The jump is worth it when runs are long enough for resistance to exceed 5% of the speaker's lowest impedance.

Practical limits

The CL3 rating covers fire safety and insurance compliance for in-wall use, but it does not guarantee performance beyond the electrical properties of 14AWG copper. Total wire resistance must stay within 5% of the speaker's minimum impedance, so very long runs or low-impedance loads may still require a heavier gauge. The four-conductor layout supports bi-wiring or two separate zones, but it does not add shielding or change the fundamental voltage drop limits of the copper itself.
