DC 5.5×2.1 mm male-to-male extension cable

This pair of 78-inch cords extends the reach of 12 V DC power supplies that use a 5.5 mm by 2.1 mm barrel connector. Each cable is built with 18 AWG oxygen-free copper conductors inside a frost-resistant, pull-resistant PVC jacket rated for continuous use up to 36 V. The male-to-male design suits CCTV cameras, LED strips, routers, printers and similar low-voltage gear.

Current capacity and voltage headroom

The assembly is specified for 1 A to 10 A loads across a 1 V to 36 V range, with 12 V and 24 V being the most common operating points. At the top end of that current band the 18 AWG conductors will warm noticeably, so sustained draws near 10 A should be kept as short as practical. The PVC insulation remains flexible down to freezing temperatures but is not rated for high-voltage AC mains.

Barrel-connector interface limits

The 5.5 mm × 2.1 mm centre-positive barrel is a de-facto standard for 5 V–24 V DC equipment, yet pin diameter and sleeve length can vary between manufacturers. A loose or oversized mating jack will cause intermittent contact and voltage drop under load. The cable must not be used beyond its 36 V DC rating or in any AC mains circuit, and polarity must match the device requirement before connection.
