Matching a memory module

Four things have to line up: the generation (DDR4 and DDR5 are physically keyed differently and do not interchange), the form factor (DIMM for desktops, SO-DIMM for laptops and mini machines), the speed, and whether the board wants registered or error-correcting modules. Desktop boards almost never take registered memory; server boards frequently require it.

A large part of this catalogue is system-specific memory — modules qualified against a particular manufacturer’s machine, listed by that machine. If you know your model, that is by far the safest route, because the compatibility work is already done.

Choosing a drive that is actually faster

NVMe drives are several times the sequential speed of SATA drives and cost little more, but they need an M.2 slot with NVMe support — an older board may have an M.2 slot that only speaks SATA. The listing states the interface and the form factor; the board manual states what the slot does.

Endurance is the figure people skip. A drive rated for a few hundred terabytes written is fine for a desktop and wrong for a database. Where the manufacturer publishes it, it is in the specification block. The SSD section is the narrower list if that is what you are here for.
