USB 2.0 to RS232 serial adapter

This USB 2.0 male to RS232 female DB9 cable connects legacy serial devices such as modems, scanners, cashier registers, CNC controllers and POS equipment to a modern USB port. It is built around the Prolific PL2303 chipset and provides a 1 Mbps data transfer rate. The 3.3 ft black PVC cable uses tinned copper conductors with triple shielding for signal integrity. It draws power directly from the USB bus so no external adapter is required.

Thermals noise and power draw

The adapter is USB bus powered and consumes only the small current allowed by the USB 2.0 specification, so it adds negligible heat inside a chassis. No fan or active cooling is present, making the device completely silent during operation. Normal use with supported serial peripherals does not raise the cable temperature above ambient. Power draw stays within the standard USB port budget without needing a supplementary supply.

Driver support and compatibility notes

The PL2303 chipset is supported natively on Windows 11, 10, 8.1, 8 and 7, as well as Linux and Mac OS, with drivers also available from the Cablecreation website. Many Windows versions will auto-detect and install the driver without user intervention. The female DB9 connector matches equipment that expects a male DB9 plug; it is not compatible with cutting plotters or SCM devices. A null modem adapter may be required if the connected device does not recognise the link.
