M.2 to U.2 Adapter Card

The Vszerda PH416 connects M.2 NVMe or SATA SSDs to a U.2 SFF-8639 backplane. It accepts B-key and M-key modules in 2230, 2242, 2260 and 2280 lengths. A physical switch selects the active protocol for the U.2 port. The card targets server builders who want to install standard M.2 drives into 2.5-inch hot-swap bays.

PCIe 3.0 x4 and SATA 6G Limits

The NVMe path runs over a PCIe 3.0 x4 link, while the SATA path is limited to the 6 Gbps SATA revision. Both interfaces share the single U.2 connector, so only one protocol is active at a time. The adapter does not support a legacy 22-pin SATA connection. An 8643-to-U.2 cable restricts usage to NVMe drives on motherboards that lack a SATA lane to the U.2 port.

Replaces Direct U.2 Drives

This card lets you use widely available M.2 SSDs instead of sourcing native U.2 drives, which are often costlier and scarcer. The jump makes sense when a server chassis provides U.2 bays but the preferred capacity or price point only exists in M.2 form factor. It is not suited for systems that require simultaneous NVMe and SATA operation on the same port or for boards without a PCIe lane wired to the U.2 connector.
