Vszerda 1-to-2 Toslink Optical Audio Splitter Adapter

What this splitter does

The Vszerda 1-to-2 Toslink adapter takes a single optical digital audio source and duplicates the signal to two receiving devices. It lets you connect a CD player, DVD player, PS3, Xbox 360 or computer to both an A/V receiver and a television or recorder at the same time. The ABS housing measures 23.5 cm by 4.6 cm by 1.4 cm and weighs 26 g. This unit is not compatible with LG products.

Signal behaviour over long runs

Because the splitter is a passive device, it simply divides the incoming light without amplification or regeneration. The two outputs share the original optical power, so each leg receives a weaker signal than a direct connection would provide. On short cables this makes no audible difference, but on longer fibre runs the reduced margin can increase bit errors or cause drop-outs. The adapter saves wear from constant plugging and unplugging but does not boost the signal for extended distances.

Toslink practical limits

Toslink carries stereo PCM or compressed surround formats such as Dolby Digital and DTS through a single fibre. The interface tops out at standard consumer sample rates and cannot transport uncompressed multichannel PCM or high-resolution formats like Dolby TrueHD. Cable length is limited by the plastic fibre’s attenuation, typically a few metres for reliable operation. The splitter adds no latency or processing, but it cannot overcome the bandwidth ceiling of the Toslink standard itself.
