What the RG-4 ring generator does

The Viking Electronics RG-4 reshapes and boosts the ringing signal on a single telephone line or PABX extension. It converts a distorted or square-wave ring into a true sine wave while duplicating the original cadence. The unit runs from a 120V AC supply and can drive up to four 1 REN devices or eight 0.5 REN devices without interfering with caller ID or call waiting.

Who should use it and who should not

Installers who need to fix weak or misshapen ringing on analog lines, ISDN terminal adapter ports, or Viking doorbox circuits will find the RG-4 a direct solution. It also preserves distinctive-ringing services. The device does not support pulse-dialing environments, so lines that rely on rotary or pulse signalling are not a fit. Buyers who need more than four 1 REN loads should look at higher-output models.

Capacity and headroom

The booster comfortably rings four standard 1 REN telephones or eight 0.5 REN phones from one line. Beyond that load the ring voltage will drop and some phones may fail to ring. The 120V AC power input is fixed, so the unit cannot be used on other mains voltages without an external transformer.
