Eight-port industrial converter

The UOTEK UT-2003A converts a single USB 1.1 or 2.0 connection into eight DB9 male ports that operate as RS-422 or RS-485 interfaces. It is aimed at automation engineers and system integrators who need to link multiple serial devices such as PLCs, meters or sensors to a modern host computer. Optical isolation rated at 2.5 kV rms and a dedicated DC/DC module protect the host side from ground loops and noise in harsh electrical environments.

Driver installation and wiring

The converter supports Windows 98 through Windows 8, plus Linux and Mac, so driver setup is usually a standard INF installation on legacy and current operating systems. No jumper wires are required to switch between RS-422 and RS-485 modes because the universal port handles both automatically. The zero-delay auto-transmit control removes the need for software timing adjustments, which eliminates a common source of communication errors in half-duplex networks.

Sustained operation with protection

Each RS-485 line carries 600 W lightning and surge suppression alongside ±15 kV ESD protection, allowing the unit to survive repeated transients during long production runs. The metal chassis measures 490 x 201 x 44 mm and operates from -25 °C to 70 °C at 5 % to 95 % humidity, so it remains stable inside cabinets that heat up over extended shifts. An external AC 100-240 V supply powers the isolated DC/DC circuitry, preventing voltage drop across all eight ports during continuous high-speed traffic at up to 128 000 bps.
