Purpose-built recorder

The Ubiquiti Networks UVC-NVR-2TB is a plug-and-play network video recorder with a preinstalled 2TB hard drive and UniFi Video software already loaded. It targets installers and small-business owners who want a self-contained appliance that manages up to 50 cameras without a separate server. The Intel D2550 processor and 4GB of memory handle H.264 compression for streams up to 1920 x 1080 resolution. Remote viewing is available on Windows PCs, iOS and Android devices.

Build integration

The unit connects through a single 10/100/1000 Ethernet port using Cat 5 or better cabling and draws power from an external 65W 19V 3.42A supply. Its compact 0.98 x 7.48 x 5.31 inch chassis weighing 2.6 lbs fits on a shelf or rack tray without consuming a full rack unit. Because the recorder, storage and management software arrive preconfigured, it frees the builder from provisioning a dedicated PC, installing an operating system or sizing a separate drive array for the surveillance workload.

Upgrade context

This appliance replaces a DIY PC running recording software plus an added hard drive, eliminating the noise, power draw and maintenance of a general-purpose computer. The jump is worth it when a project needs centralized management for up to 50 cameras, hardware-accelerated H.264 encoding at 1080p, and a validated hardware-software stack that reduces deployment time. It is not suited for installations requiring more than 2TB of local retention, higher than 1080p capture, or redundant power supplies.
