Tiffen 72mm Soft/FX 4 Filter Kit

The Tiffen 72mm Soft/FX 4 Filter is a diffusion filter designed for portrait work with camcorders. It uses a pattern of tiny lenslets to soften fine skin details such as wrinkles and blemishes while keeping larger features like eyes sharp. The filter is constructed with ColorCore technology, laminating the filter material between two pieces of optical glass ground flat to precise tolerances and mounted in a precision metal ring.

ColorCore Lamination and Filter Strength

ColorCore technology permanently bonds the filter material between optical glass, providing consistent color and density control across the surface. The Soft/FX 4 density offers a stronger diffusion effect compared to lighter grades, reducing contrast and minimizing facial imperfections more noticeably. This construction avoids the variability common in dyed-in-the-mass filters and maintains optical clarity for video capture.

Portrait Videographers Needing Strong Diffusion

This kit suits videographers who want pronounced softening of skin texture directly in-camera without relying on post-production. It is not intended for shooters who prefer a subtle or barely visible diffusion effect, nor for those needing a filter thread size other than 72mm. Users seeking minimal highlight flare or contrast reduction should consider a lower density in the same series.

Questions about this item

How often will the 72mm Soft/FX 4 filter need replacement under normal use?

The ColorCore construction laminates the filter material between two pieces of optical glass, so the effect does not degrade and the filter does not require scheduled replacement.

What is the first optical limit reached when shooting continuously with the Soft/FX 4 filter?

The filter puts fine skin details out of focus while keeping eyes sharp, so the practical limit is the chosen density's strength rather than a technical constraint.

Does the 72mm filter add noticeable heat or power draw during all-day video recording?

As a passive glass filter it generates no heat and draws no power, leaving the camcorder's thermal and battery performance unchanged.
