40 kV High-Voltage Probe

This probe extends a standard multimeter so it can measure DC voltages up to 40 kV and AC voltages up to 28 kV at 50 or 60 Hz. It is built for engineers and technicians who work with high-voltage power supplies, insulation testing or laboratory research. The 1000:1 attenuation ratio means the meter reads 1 V for every 1 kV present. An extra-long insulated handle keeps the operator's hands clear of live conductors.

10 MΩ Meter Input Requirement

Accurate readings only occur when the probe is paired with a digital multimeter that presents a 10 MΩ input impedance and ±0.5% or better basic accuracy. The probe itself presents a 1000 MΩ input impedance and draws a maximum of 40 µA at 40 kV DC. Auto-ranging must be disabled on the meter because impedance shifts during range changes. Polarity is selectable for both positive and negative measurements.

±2 % DC Accuracy Under Load

The probe maintains its ±2 % full-scale DC accuracy and ±5 % full-scale AC accuracy while dissipating up to 1.6 W at the maximum 40 kV DC test point. A temperature coefficient of 200 ppm per degree Celsius applies across the 0 °C to 50 °C operating range. The unit weighs 398 g (0.88 lb) and ships with accessories and a manual. It is not suited for continuous duty above the rated voltage or for meters lacking the specified 10 MΩ input.
