Innocard
Converts an M.2 NVMe SSD to a U.3 SFF-8639 bay with PCIe Gen4 support and built-in 12V-to-3.3V power conversion
The Innocard GD1402A converts an M.2 NVMe solid-state drive to a U.3 SFF-8639 interface. It uses a built-in 30u connector with pin-out defined by SFF-9402 Rev 1.1. The adapter suits builders who need to install an M.2 22x80mm drive into a U.3 backplane or enclosure.
A synchronous buck converter steps 12 V down to 3.3 V for the M.2 NVMe SSD with a 5.5 A maximum output current and a 6.5 A programmable limit. Protection includes output discharge control, overcurrent protection, undervoltage lock-out, over/under voltage protection and thermal shutdown. The 3.3 V input is guarded by a 400 W TVS and the output uses a 32 m ohm NexFET plus a Schottky barrier rectifier. ESD HBM rating is 500 V.
The adapter accepts M.2 3.3 V and 1.8 V supplies and translates VIO_CFG, PERST#, CLKREQ#, WAKE# and PWRDIS signals between voltage levels. Hot-plug power with eFuse protection is built in for the M.2 NVMe SSD. It does not suit drives longer than 80 mm or builders who need a second card slot.

Insert the M.2 22x80mm NVMe SSD into the onboard slot, then connect the SFF-8639 U.3 interface to the backplane. The step often missed is ensuring the 3.3V VIO_CFG, PERST#, CLKREQ# and WAKE# signal translators align with your drive's 1.8V or 3.3V logic levels.
The onboard PWM buck converter, 32 m ohm NexFET, Schottky rectifier and 400W TVS diodes are solid-state with no moving parts. No scheduled maintenance is required; only replace the unit if the 5.5A overcurrent protection, UVLO or thermal shutdown trips repeatedly, indicating component fatigue.
The 5.5A maximum output current of the 12V-to-3.3V synchronous buck converter is the first hard limit. If the M.2 SSD draws more, the programmable 6.5A overcurrent protection and thermal shutdown will activate, throttling or cutting power to protect the drive.
