HPE MSL 1/8 LTO-8 Tape Autoloader

The HPE P84143-B25 is a 1U rackmount autoloader designed for small to mid-sized organisations that need automated, offline backup and long-term archiving. It ships with one LTO-8 Ultrium 30750 drive and five LTO-8 data cartridges, providing up to 30 TB of compressed capacity at a 2.5:1 ratio. The unit supports a single drive per enclosure and offers eight cartridge slots for unattended operation.

Build quality and 8 Gb Fibre Channel connectivity

The autoloader uses a compact 1U black chassis that fits standard server racks and includes an 8 Gb/s Fibre Channel host interface for direct attachment to SAN fabrics or HBA ports. Encryption is handled by on-board AES 256-bit capability, so data at rest on each cartridge is protected without host-side software overhead. The single-drive design keeps cabling simple and limits the mechanical components that require periodic service.

Practical limits of the LTO-8 platform

Maximum native throughput is 300 MB/s, and the eight-slot magazine caps offline capacity at eight cartridges unless the magazine is swapped manually. The drive reads and writes LTO-8 media and reads LTO-7 cartridges, but it cannot write to LTO-7 or any earlier generation. Organisations that need higher native throughput, more concurrent drives, or native LTO-9 write support will need a different library platform.
