Cat 6 cable for Gigabit Ethernet

This five-foot patch cable uses unshielded twisted-pair construction with RJ45 connectors on both ends. Performance under sustained load

The cable is tested to 550 MHz and 1 Gbps, giving headroom above the minimum Category 6 requirement of 250 MHz. This margin reduces impedance variation, structural return loss and near-end crosstalk during continuous high-throughput traffic. Connectors are rated for 750 insertion and extraction cycles, so repeated patching or re-routing does not degrade the electrical interface. Snagless boots add strain relief that protects the connector latch during long-term use.

Practical limits of the Cat 6 interface

Category 6 unshielded twisted pair supports 1 Gbps over the full 100-metre channel and can carry 10 Gbps up to 55 metres under favourable conditions. The five-foot length here is well within both distances, so the link will not be limited by attenuation. Performance ultimately depends on the quality of every connector, patch panel and switch port in the path; a single sub-standard component can lower the effective bandwidth below the cable's rated capability.
