USB-C PD Trigger Cable for Laptops

This cable converts a USB-C Power Delivery charger into a 20 V DC barrel output for laptops that use a 5.5 × 2.5 mm or 5.5 × 2.1 mm jack. It contains a built-in PD trigger that negotiates the required voltage with a compatible 65 W or higher USB-C charger. The adapter is intended for users who want to replace a proprietary brick with a single GaN charger for travel or desk use. It does not support 5 V or 12 V devices.

Sustained Load Behaviour

The trigger requests a fixed 18–20 V PDO from the charger and passes it straight to the barrel plug without active regulation. Output stability therefore depends entirely on the charger’s own voltage regulation under continuous load. If the charger cannot maintain its advertised PDO at full current, the laptop will see the same droop or shutdown behaviour as with its original supply. The cable itself adds only the resistance of its copper conductors.

Thermals Noise and Power Draw

The assembly has no fan, semiconductor junction or switching circuitry, so it generates no audible noise and negligible heat during normal operation. Power loss is limited to the I²R drop across the short copper wires and the two barrel connectors. Because the cable draws no power for its own operation, the charger’s total output equals the laptop’s input plus this small conduction loss.
