RS-232 to RS-422 Industrial Converter

This UOTEK UT-205A unit converts RS-232 signals into balanced differential RS-422 signals for reliable long-distance communication. It connects a PC or controller with a standard DB9 port to RS-422 field devices such as sensors, PLCs or intelligent instruments. The converter operates in asynchronous full-duplex mode and requires no external power supply, drawing energy directly from the serial port via charge-pump technology.

Plug-and-play with terminal-block wiring

Installation is straightforward: the DB9 female end mates with the host port while the DB9 male end and screw terminal block provide flexible RS-422 connections using twisted-pair or shielded cable. No driver installation or RTS/DTR handshake configuration is needed because the built-in I/O circuit auto-controls data flow direction. The only common issue is incorrect A/B line pairing on the terminal block, which will prevent communication until corrected.

1.2 km range at up to 115.2 kbps

The converter supports baud rates from 300 bps to 115.2 kbps and extends the transmission distance to 1,200 metres (4,000 ft) over RS-422 cabling, far beyond the 5-metre limit of native RS-232. It is rated for industrial environments from -40 to 85 °C with 5 % to 95 % relative humidity. The compact 63 mm × 33 mm × 17 mm housing fits inside tight enclosures, but the single-channel design cannot serve multiple RS-422 drops without additional converters.
