Spare Tire Hoist Access Rod

The Steelman 96098 is a 30-inch carbon steel rod designed to lower cradle-suspended spare tires on late-model Ford vehicles. Its 3/8-inch square drive engages the hoist mechanism directly, while a black powder coat resists rust and a purple coating on the hex end aids quick identification. The tool works with a 7/8-inch socketed half-inch drive ratchet, combination wrench or standard lug wrench. It is a focused solution for roadside or shop tire changes on compatible Ford platforms.

Replaces Lost or Damaged Factory Tools

This rod replaces the original equipment hoist key that may be missing, bent or corroded after years of exposure. The upgrade is worth it when the factory tool is unavailable or when a longer, more robust carbon steel shaft provides better leverage on seized mechanisms. It is not for vehicles with internally mounted spare carriers, external winch systems or any application that does not use a 3/8-inch square hoist input. Limits of the Square Drive Interface

The 3/8-inch square interface transmits high torque to lower a heavy tire assembly, but it cannot compensate for a stripped hoist nut or a frozen cable drum. Excessive force on a corroded mechanism may round the square drive or twist the rod beyond safe use. The tool provides no mechanical advantage beyond the leverage of the attached ratchet or wrench. Users must inspect the hoist assembly for damage before applying full turning effort.
