Shaft Seal for Grease-Lubricated Machinery

The SKF 22565 is a rotary shaft seal designed for agricultural equipment running on grease lubrication. Its HM14 design code and single nitrile rubber lip suit standard sealing tasks where the fluid is contained by a contact seal. The uncoated case fits a 3.44 in bore and handles common shop fluids such as mineral oils, diesel, gasoline, greases, animal and vegetable oils, and light heating oil. It is a direct replacement component for maintenance cycles on compatible shafts.

Thermals Noise and Power Draw in Normal Use

Operating pressure is rated to 10 psi, so the seal runs within low-pressure grease environments without extruding the lip. Nitrile rubber maintains elasticity across typical agricultural temperature ranges, limiting heat build-up at the contact face. The 0.25 in width keeps frictional drag low, so the seal adds negligible parasitic load to the rotating assembly. No spring is fitted, which simplifies installation and reduces the chance of lip distortion during service.

Upgrade Path and When the Jump Is Worth It

This seal replaces worn HM14 pattern units on 2.25 in shafts where the bore measures 3.44 in and the original width was 0.25 in. The jump is justified when the old lip shows hardening, cracking or leakage with approved fluids listed in the specification. It is not for applications exceeding 10 psi, for dry-running conditions, or for shafts needing a double-lip or spring-loaded design to exclude heavy contamination.
