Replaces a bare front element

Without a filter the front glass of a lens is exposed to dust, moisture, fingerprints and accidental knocks that can cause permanent damage. Adding this filter moves the first point of contact to a replaceable plane of glass, so scratches or coating wear occur on the filter instead of the lens. The upgrade is worthwhile whenever a lens is used in environments where rain, spray, sand or frequent handling are likely, because the cost of a filter is far lower than a front-element repair.
