The Seeed Studio Grove MLX90615 is a digital infrared temperature sensor designed for non-contact measurement. It integrates an IR-sensitive thermopile detector and signal conditioning chip into a single package. The module uses a Grove-compatible interface for plug-and-play connectivity with Arduino and other platforms. It suits hobbyists and engineers building thermal monitoring or detection projects.

SMBus Interface and Detection Limits

Communication occurs via an SMBus-compatible digital interface, allowing up to 127 sensors to share a common two-wire bus. The sensor measures ambient temperatures from 40 to 85°C and object temperatures from 40 to 115°C. Accurate object readings require the target to be within 3 cm of the sensor without touching it. The module achieves a measurement resolution of 0.02°C.

Accuracy Decides Suitability

The single specification that determines fit is the stated accuracy of 1°C across the operating range. Applications requiring tighter tolerances must look elsewhere. This sensor serves well for general-purpose thermal sensing where 1°C precision is acceptable. Buyers needing higher precision or wider temperature spans cannot meet those needs with this module.
