Pirate Audio Headphone Amp for Raspberry Pi
This mini HAT adds amplified 24-bit 192KHz digital audio to any 40-pin Raspberry Pi model. It uses a PCM5100A DAC and PAM8908 amplifier with a selectable 12dB high-gain boost. A 1.3 inch 240x240 IPS display and four tactile buttons provide a compact control surface. The board arrives fully assembled and ready to mount.
I2S audio and GPIO button limits
Audio streams over the Pi I2S bus, so no analogue line-level input is available on the board itself. The four buttons share standard GPIO pins, which may conflict with other HATs that claim the same pins. The 3.5mm jack is the only audio output; there is no onboard speaker connector or second headphone socket.
Mini HAT build and daily implications
At 65x30.5x9.5mm the board fits inside many standard Pi cases without extra clearance. The 40-pin header passes through, leaving unused pins accessible for stacking or jumper wires. The ST7789-driven IPS screen is soldered in place, so orientation is fixed relative to the Pi. The gain toggle is a physical switch, not software-controlled, preventing accidental volume jumps.

Questions about this item
Should I use low-gain or high-gain for my headphones?
Start on low-gain; switch to high-gain if you need 12 dB more volume for high-impedance headphones.
What does 24-bit / 192KHz mean when the board is on a Raspberry Pi?
The PCM5100A DAC accepts 24-bit samples at up to 192 kHz over I2S, so the Pi can stream studio-rate audio directly to the 3.5 mm jack.
Does the 40-pin header carry the audio signal or do I need extra wiring?
Digital audio travels over the Pi’s I2S pins on the 40-pin header; the on-board PAM8908 amplifies it and drives the 3.5 mm jack without extra cables.
