Sustained-pressure behaviour with resilient wedge

Under continuous 300 psi water pressure the ductile-iron body and EPDM seat maintain a tight seal without the creep seen in metal-to-metal seats. The non-rising stem keeps the operating envelope compact so the valve fits in crowded vaults while the wheel handle transmits steady torque through the cast-iron stem. Steam service at 250 psi is rated but prolonged cycling at that temperature will accelerate EPDM ageing faster than the iron components.

Flange alignment and bolted-bonnet installation

The valve mounts between standard Class 125 flanges; installers must verify flange faces are parallel and gaskets are centred to prevent leakage at the full 300 psi rating. The bolted bonnet allows internal inspection but requires a full set of flange bolts and a torque wrench to seat the bonnet evenly. Over-tightening the wheel handle can distort the resilient wedge, so operate the valve slowly through its full travel after installation to confirm smooth seating.
