1-inch FNPT Y strainer for steam and water systems

The Mueller Steam Specialty 581 CS Y strainer installs in a 1-inch female NPT line to trap debris before it reaches valves or pumps. Carbon steel housing rated Class 600 handles 480 psi at 100 degrees F and 1015 psi maximum pressure. A 304 stainless steel perforated screen with 0.062-inch holes ships installed. The 3/8-inch blow-off port allows cleaning without removing the body from the pipeline.

Inline protection that frees downstream components

The strainer body measures 4 5/8 inches long and 5 3/8 inches high, fitting between standard 1-inch FNPT fittings in steam or water service. Its 15 gpm Cv flow factor keeps pressure drop low while the screen catches scale and sediment. The blow-off connection lets operators flush captured material without breaking the pipe joint, reducing maintenance downtime on boilers, heat exchangers and pump inlets.

0.062-inch perforations handle typical steam

The 304 stainless screen stops particles larger than the stated perforation size, protecting seats and impellers in moderate-flow applications. At 15 gpm Cv the unit passes design flow with minimal restriction, but finer silt or high-velocity slurry will pass through or load the screen quickly. The 3/8-inch blow-off port cannot accommodate large-volume blowdown piping, so very dirty systems need supplementary filtration upstream.
