Expanded connectivity

This Microsoft USB4 dock adds multiple ports including USB-A, USB-C, HDMI 2.1 and Ethernet to a single upstream connection. It delivers up to 40Gb/s data transfer speeds and supports dual 4K displays at 60Hz or a single 8K display at 30Hz. Up to 65W power passthrough charges the host device while peripherals are connected. The compact black design keeps the desk tidy.

Universal compatibility

It works with Surface devices and any USB-C or USB4/Thunderbolt 4 host, making it versatile for mixed fleets. Buyers whose laptops only offer USB-C 3.2 or earlier will not reach the 40Gb/s bandwidth or dual 4K 60Hz video capability. Systems without USB-C video output cannot use the display ports at all.

40Gb/s USB4 bandwidth

The single specification that decides fit is the host port speed: only USB4 or Thunderbolt 4 hosts unlock the full 40Gb/s throughput and dual 4K 60Hz output. A slower USB-C port reduces both bandwidth and display performance.

Questions about this item

Should I pick the version with two USB-C ports and HDMI 2.1 or the one with a single 8K output?

The dock provides two USB-C ports, one USB-A, HDMI 2.1 and Ethernet; it can drive two 4K monitors at 60 Hz or one 8K monitor at 30 Hz from the same ports.

What does 40 Gbps mean when I plug in an external SSD?

The USB4 interface delivers up to 40 Gbps, so large file transfers run roughly four times faster than a USB-C 3.2 connection.

Does the USB4 port cap at Thunderbolt speeds or can it go higher?

The dock uses USB4 Gen 3, which is Thunderbolt 4 compatible, so the practical ceiling is the 40 Gbps specified for this model.
