The 0.45 grade reduces light by 1.5 stops on the dark half while leaving the clear half unaffected. This handles moderate brightness differences between sky and land effectively. It runs out when the dynamic range exceeds 1.5 stops, such as sunrise scenes with very bright skies and deep shadow foregrounds. Stacking additional filters can extend range but may introduce vignetting or colour shifts.

Practical limits of the hard-edge design

The hard edge transition creates an abrupt shift between the graduated and clear zones, which works well with normal and longer focal lengths. It becomes visible and unnatural when used with wide-angle lenses where the horizon occupies less of the frame.
