The Lantronix EDS5016 is a rack-mountable device server that connects sixteen serial devices to a Gigabit Ethernet network. It targets administrators who need remote access to legacy equipment such as security systems, medical instruments or point-of-sale terminals. The unit provides a single RJ-45 management port and one expansion slot for additional connectivity options.

Sustained Serial-to-Ethernet Throughput

The server handles continuous data streams at serial baud rates up to 921.6 kbps across all sixteen ports simultaneously. Its 256 MB memory buffer absorbs traffic bursts without dropping packets during extended sessions. Enterprise-grade SSL/TLS and SSH encryption run in hardware, so security processing does not degrade throughput over long operational periods.

Gigabit Ethernet and SFP Interface Limits

The copper RJ-45 interface operates at 10, 100 or 1000 Mbps over twisted-pair cabling within standard distance limits. The SFP cage accepts 100 or 1000 Mbps fibre modules for longer runs, but the serial engine itself caps each port at 921.6 kbps. Total aggregate bandwidth cannot exceed the single gigabit uplink capacity.
