HOYA Filter 82mm Linear Polarizing Screw-in Filter

What this filter does

The HOYA 82mm Linear Polarizing Screw-in Filter is built for photographers using manual focus cameras who want to control reflections and boost colour saturation directly at the lens. It cuts glare from non-metallic surfaces such as water or snow and deepens blue skies without shifting the overall colour balance. The rotating mount lets you dial the strength of the effect while looking through the viewfinder. Coatings on both sides reduce internal reflections and help transmit more light.

Thermals noise and power

As a passive glass filter there are no thermals, no fan noise and no power draw to consider. It adds negligible weight to the front of the lens and does not affect the camera’s battery life or operating temperature. The only physical interaction is the smooth rotation of the front ring to vary the polarisation angle. Performance stays consistent in any ambient condition because there are no electronic components.

When the upgrade makes sense

This filter replaces having no polariser at all or swaps out a lower-quality uncoated filter that produces flare and colour casts. The jump is worth it when you regularly shoot landscapes, water scenes or snow where glare washes out detail and skies look pale. It is not suited for cameras with semi-silvered mirrors or prisms that split light for metering or autofocus because linear polarisation can cause unpredictable exposure or focus errors. Buyers who need a circular polariser for modern autofocus bodies should choose a PL-CIR type instead.
