HID Prox 125 kHz Reader for CCID Log-in

The OMNIKEY 5025 CL reads HID Prox cards at 125 kHz and connects through a USB 2.0 full-speed interface. It is powered entirely by the host bus and targets organisations that want to reuse existing proximity badges for PC, thin-client or zero-client authentication. A built-in LED shows reader status during operation.

CCID Driver Package and Mounting Accessories

Native CCID support removes the need for proprietary drivers on Windows, Linux or macOS, allowing the device to work immediately in standard smart-card stacks. The bundle also includes an adhesive plate, a screw-mount bracket and a card holder so the reader can be fixed to a desk, a wall or a kiosk without extra hardware.

USB 2.0 Full-Speed and LF Range Limits

The USB 2.0 full-speed link caps bandwidth at 12 Mbit/s, which is sufficient for the low-frequency protocol but prevents use on hosts that only expose high-speed or SuperSpeed ports without backward compatibility. The 125 kHz inductive coupling requires the card to be held within a few centimetres of the reader surface, so the device cannot cover doorway-scale read zones.

Questions about this item

Will the USB cable or the LED indicator need replacing after heavy daily use?

The 78.7 inch USB Type A cable is fixed to the reader and the LED is surface-mounted; neither is user-replaceable, so the whole unit would be swapped if either fails.

What is the first limit reached when the reader stays powered and scanning continuously?

The operating ceiling is 70 °C (158 °F); sustained operation above that temperature is the primary constraint.

How much heat and noise does the reader produce when it runs all day on a thin client?

It draws power from the USB bus with no fan, so it generates minimal heat and is completely silent during continuous operation.
