Purpose and fit

The Freewell 77mm Threaded Variable ND 2-5 Stop Hard Stop Filter is built for photographers and filmmakers who need adjustable light control on standard daylight shoots. It threads onto 77mm lenses and covers a 2 to 5 stop range, equivalent to ND4 through ND32, suiting conditions from cloudy to bright sun. The hard-stop design prevents cross-polarisation and the maker states zero vignetting from 16mm focal length upward. It is not for users who require stronger density for very bright snow or long-exposure work beyond five stops.

Optical performance and handling

The filter uses pure high-definition optical glass with 18 layers of multi-coating on each side to maintain image clarity across the variable range. The coating stack is rated waterproof, dustproof, scratchproof and oilproof, so the front element resists rain, grit and fingerprints during outdoor use. Because the hard stop locks the rotation at the maximum density, there is no risk of the "X" pattern that can appear on endless variable ND filters when pushed too far.
