Infrared leak detector for HVAC technicians

The Fieldpiece DR82 uses a state-of-the-art infrared sensor to locate refrigerant leaks in air-conditioning and refrigeration systems. It detects all HFC, CFC, HCFC, HFO and blended refrigerants with sensitivity better than 0.03 oz/yr. A massive backlit LCD screen, flashing lighted tip and loud beeper give clear leak-rate indication. The instrument does not trigger on soap bubbles or oil.

Sustained detection stability

Infrared sensing maintains consistent response during extended searches because the optical bench does not degrade like heated-diode elements. The detector ignores common contaminants such as soap bubbles and oil, so the audible and visual alarms only sound when refrigerant is actually present. Technicians can move along long pipe runs without the sensor drifting or requiring frequent recalibration in the field.

Practical limits of infrared refrigerant sensing

The technology detects concentrations down to the stated sensitivity but cannot identify the specific refrigerant blend or quantify the total charge loss. Detection range depends on airflow, temperature and the size of the leak orifice, so very small weeps in turbulent areas may need closer probe placement. The tool is not a combustion-gas analyser and will not respond to nitrogen, carbon dioxide or hydrocarbon refrigerants outside the listed classes.
