Front-panel USB 3.1 Type-E extension

This 50 cm cable extends a motherboard USB 3.1 front-panel header to a more accessible position. It carries a Type-E male plug on one end and a Type-E female socket on the other, preserving the 10 Gbps signalling path. The link is intended for builders who need to route the internal header to a front-panel port or a drive bay adapter.

IDC header layout and daily routing

Both connectors use the IDC-style Type-E header defined for USB 3.1, which adds pins to the earlier USB 3.0 layout while keeping backward compatibility. The male end seats directly on the board header; the female end accepts a standard front-panel cable or bracket. The half-metre length allows tidy routing behind the motherboard tray or along the front-panel channel without strain on the pins.

Replaces short fixed headers

The cable replaces a too-short front-panel lead that cannot reach a relocated port or a custom bracket. It is worthwhile when the case front-panel cable falls short of the motherboard header after a chassis change or a liquid-cooling reroute.
