Silk Rainbow PLA — who it is for

eSUN Silk Rainbow Metal PLA is a 1.75 mm biodegradable filament that shifts colour across the spool. It targets makers who want a glossy, silk-like surface on decorative prints such as vases, figurines and art pieces without post-processing. The material prints at 190–220 °C on any FDM printer and needs no heated bed, though 60–80 °C improves adhesion. Indoor use is safe thanks to low odour and non-toxic virgin PLA.

Upgrading from standard PLA

The silk additive removes visible layer lines and adds a metallic sheen that plain PLA cannot achieve, making the jump worthwhile for display models where surface finish matters more than mechanical strength. Heat distortion reaches 67 °C at 0.45 MPa, so functional parts under load or high temperature are not suitable. Density of 1.43 g/cm³ and tensile figures match regular PLA, so structural performance does not improve.

Install and common issues

The spool ships vacuum-sealed with a desiccant pack; mount it on a standard holder and feed directly into the extruder. Tight 1.75 mm tolerance and perfect roundness prevent tangling and nozzle clogging, while support structures peel away cleanly. Moisture absorption can cause bubbles, so reseal after opening. Excessive retraction or temperatures above 220 °C may induce stringing despite the low 2.5 melt flow index.
