Practical limits of anti-static bag protection

Anti-static bags shield components from electrostatic discharge only while the item remains fully inside the sealed bag. They do not protect against physical shock, moisture ingress, or extreme temperatures, so padded outer packaging is still required for shipping. The PET material is non-conductive and non-toxic, but it cannot replace a grounded workstation strap when handling sensitive ICs. Once the zip-lock is opened, the static-shielding benefit ends immediately.

Installation ease and common issues

Using the bags is straightforward: place the component inside, press the zip-lock tracks together, and run a finger across to seal. The most frequent problem is an incomplete seal caused by dust or debris on the interlocking ridges, which lets air and static fields penetrate. Overfilling a bag stresses the closure and can tear the PET film, especially on the smallest 3.15 by 5.12 inch size. Sharp component leads or heatsink corners may puncture the material if not oriented carefully.
