Portable optical drive

The Avantalk 2 in 1 accessory is an external CD/DVD drive designed for laptops and desktops that lack an internal optical bay. It connects through a single USB 3.0 Type-C cable that also supplies power, so no extra adapter is required. The slim 13 mm profile makes it easy to carry alongside a thin-and-light notebook. It targets users who still need to read or write physical media on modern systems.

Capacity and headroom

The drive reaches a maximum of 24x for CD read or write and 8x for DVD read or write, with the USB 3.0 interface delivering up to 5 Gbps (625 MB/s) theoretical bandwidth. Those speeds handle typical software install discs, music CDs and video DVDs without bottleneck. It does not support Blu-ray media, so high-capacity optical archiving is outside its range.

Upgrade path

This unit replaces a missing or failed internal DVD writer on any machine running Windows 11, 10, 8, 7, XP, 2000, ME, 98 or SE, Linux, or Mac OS 10.6 and later. The jump is worthwhile when a built-in drive has died, when a new ultraportable omits an optical bay, or when a desktop builder wants a plug-and-play burner without opening the case. It is not for users who need Blu-ray playback or M-DISC archival writing.
