24-unit balanced-armature IEM

The KZ AST packs twenty-four balanced-armature drivers into each earpiece, arranged in a multi-driver matrix that covers low, mid and high frequencies. A zinc-alloy shell machined to ±0.03 mm tolerance houses the array, while a detachable 0.75 mm 2-pin cable terminates in a 3.5 mm plug. The design targets musicians and audiophiles who want a reference-grade in-ear monitor without a microphone.

Upgrade from fewer-driver hybrids

Earlier KZ models and typical hybrid IEMs use far fewer balanced-armature units, limiting resolution and channel separation. The jump to a 24-unit configuration is worth it when critical listening, stage monitoring or studio reference work demand precise imaging and a frequency response extending to 40000 Hz. Buyers who only need casual portable listening or a headset with an inline mic will not benefit from the added complexity.

Limits of the 3.5 mm analogue interface

The 3.5 mm connection relies entirely on the source device’s DAC and amplifier stage, so output impedance and voltage swing become the practical ceiling for dynamics and noise floor. With a 30 Ω load and 103 dB sensitivity the AST is easy to drive, yet a high-impedance phone jack can still dampen bass control and raise the noise floor. The fixed 125 cm cable length also restricts desk or stage mobility unless an extension is added.
