The 3M 81471 pad uses select lamb’s wool hide trimmed to 20 mm length for a more aggressive cut than longer-fiber alternatives. It is designed to remove finishing abrasive sand scratches, oxidation and other surface defects on automotive OEM, marine and aerospace coatings. The dense natural pile conforms to contours for even finishing with less heat buildup during use.

Sustained cutting action with reduced heat

Under continuous operation the dense pile maintains consistent contact with curved panels while the shorter 20 mm fibers generate less heat buildup than longer wool pads. This allows the pad to keep removing defects efficiently across extended buffing sessions without the performance drop caused by excessive surface temperature. The Hookit attachment system holds the pad securely throughout the job.

Check backing plate size and polish compatibility

Before ordering, verify that your machine accepts a 5-23/64 in diameter disc with a 13/16 in thickness. The pad requires 3M Finesse-it polishes, which are sold separately, to achieve the intended cut and finish. Ensure your backing plate uses the Hookit interface so the pad locks securely and can be changed quickly between steps.
