Cuts 5/16"-18 UNC threads in through-holes with a TiN-coated high-speed steel plug tap
This Westward spiral point tap cuts 5/16"-18 UNC threads in a right-hand direction. It is made from high speed steel with a TiN coating for wear resistance. The H3 thread limit and Class 3B fit suit general-purpose threading work. Two flutes push chips ahead of the cut in through-holes.
A worn tap produces oversize or rough threads that weaken fasteners. The TiN coating on this tool reduces friction and extends edge life in steel and alloy. The jump is worth it when thread quality must stay consistent across multiple holes. It replaces taps that have lost their lead or show chipping on the flutes.
The 1 1/8 in thread length handles typical through-hole depths in plate and bracket work. Overall length of 2 23/32 in gives enough reach for standard tap wrenches. Two flutes limit chip capacity in deep or blind holes, so this tap is not for bottoming operations. It runs out when hole depth exceeds the thread length or when chip evacuation becomes critical.

Use a tap wrench that accepts a 5/16 inch shank; the overall length is 2 23/32 inches and the thread length is 1 1/8 inches.
Align the tap perpendicular to the workpiece, apply steady downward pressure while turning clockwise, and use cutting fluid to prevent the 2-flute TiN tip from wandering.
Replace it when threads show galling, the TiN coating wears off the flutes, or the tap no longer cuts a clean 3B class fit in 5/16"-18 UNC holes.
