Plug-and-play limits

Each cable connects instantly with no driver installation on any operating system that supports the USB 3.0 standard. Full 3.0 throughput requires both the host port and the attached device to implement the 3.0 specification; otherwise the link falls back to 2.0 or 1.1 speeds. Aged, loose or oxidised ports can prevent the higher rate from negotiating. The maker notes that Oculus VR headsets are not compatible with this extension.

Steady-state throughput

Under continuous transfer the link sustains the 3.0 signalling rate provided the total cable run stays within the recommended 3 ft beyond the host’s own cable; longer runs may reduce bandwidth. Active hubs can restore signal quality if marginal ports or added length degrade performance.
