16-Foot Active USB Extension Cable

This active USB extension cable measures 16 feet and carries a USB-A male connector on one end and a USB-A female port on the other. It is built for users who need to place a USB 2.0 or USB 1.1 device farther from the host computer than a standard passive cable allows. The active circuitry maintains signal integrity over the full length.

USB 2.0 High-Speed Signal Limit

The cable supports USB 2.0 high speed at up to 480 Mb/s and falls back to USB 1.1 at 12 Mb/s when required. Active repeater electronics inside the cable compensate for attenuation that would normally restrict a passive copper run to about 5 metres. Up to three of these cables can be chained together to reach greater distances without exceeding the electrical limits of the specification.

Replaces Passive Cables Beyond Five Metres

Standard passive USB cables cannot reliably carry high-speed signals past five metres, so this active extension replaces them whenever the peripheral must sit further away. The upgrade is worthwhile when a printer, scanner or other USB 2.0 device needs to be positioned across a room or through a conduit where a shorter cable cannot reach. It does not add bandwidth beyond the 480 Mb/s ceiling of the USB 2.0 standard.

Questions about this item

Should I choose a single 16-foot cable or chain multiple cables together?

One cable reaches 16 feet. You can link up to three of these cables end-to-end for longer runs while keeping USB 2.0 high-speed performance.

What does the 480 Mb/s rating mean when I plug this into my computer?

The cable supports USB 2.0 high speed at up to 480 Mb/s, so data transfers and peripheral signals run at full USB 2.0 rates across the 16-foot length.

Which USB standard does the USB-A to USB-A connection use and what speed does it cap at?

It uses the USB 2.0 standard with a USB-A male plug on one end and a USB-A female port on the other, capping throughput at 480 Mb/s.
