USB AVRISP CH Programmer

This USB programmer uses the same MCU and core circuit as the AT AVRISP for stable, reliable operation. It is identified as AVRISP or STK500 in AVR Studio and supports versions 4 through 7. The CH340G USB to UART converter works with popular operating systems including Windows 10. A standard ISP 6-pin connector and a 6-pin to 10-pin adapter are included.

Sustained programming speed

High-speed programming handles FLASH ROM, EEPROM, fuses and lock bits. A 45K program file with verification completes in 5.5 seconds when the target MCU runs an 8 MHz crystal and the programmer speed is set to 1.8 MHz. The quasi-USB interface appears as a configurable COM port, allowing several programmers to connect to one PC simultaneously.

Frequency output and software limits

Two through holes on the back provide a configurable 0 to 3.6864 MHz frequency output, with round for GND and square for PCLK. Supported front-end software includes AVR Studio and WinAVR GCC, accepting files from IAR, ICCAVR and CVAVR. The COM port must be configured as COM1 to COM4 on first use. Buyers who need a JTAG or debugWIRE interface cannot use this device.

Questions about this item

Does the CH340G USB-to-UART chip on this programmer draw enough power to run hot during long programming sessions?

The device is powered from the USB port and uses a CH340G converter; it has no fan or heatsink and runs cool under normal AVR Studio use.

What software and operating-system support must already be on my PC before I can use this AVRISP CH?

You need AVR Studio 4, 5, 6 or 7 (or WinAVR/GCC) installed on Windows 10 or earlier; the CH340G driver must be present for the virtual COM port.

Will the standard ISP 6-pin connector on this unit plug directly into older 10-pin AVR target headers?

A 6-pin to 10-pin adapter is included in the package, so legacy 10-pin boards connect without modification.
