Boat Keel Protection Strip

Megaware KeelGuard is a 9-foot white abrasion-resistant strip designed for boat owners who want to shield the keel from sand, rocks and ramp contact. The polymer-urethane blend and pressure-sensitive adhesive bond permanently to the hull, preserving the gelcoat and underlying fiberglass laminates. Angled grooves create hydrodynamic channels that reduce drag while the contoured edges seal out water ingress.

Surface Preparation Requirements

Before applying the protector the keel area must be clean, dry and free of wax, polish or loose paint so the adhesive can achieve full bond strength. Ambient temperature should be within the range recommended by the adhesive manufacturer for proper curing. The contoured profile follows the hull curve, so verify the keel radius matches the strip’s flexibility to avoid gaps or lifting after installation.

Upgrade From Bare Gelcoat Or Worn Tape

This product replaces an unprotected keel or deteriorated keel tape that no longer seals the hull. The jump is worth it when the existing finish shows abrasion through to the fiberglass or when repeated launching causes progressive gelcoat loss. Boats kept on trailers that contact rollers or bunks, or vessels frequently beached on sand and rock, gain the most service-life extension from the hydrodynamic groove design and permanent adhesive seal.
