Product Overview

The IKEA ASKHOLMEN flower box in dark brown provides a sturdy container for plants, vegetables or flowers on a balcony or terrace. It is made from solid acacia, a dense hardwood chosen for natural durability. The wood arrives pre-treated with a semi-transparent stain that protects the surface while keeping the grain visible. This planter suits gardeners who want a long-lasting wooden box for outdoor growing.

Setup Check

Before ordering, confirm that the intended location can support the weight of the box once it is filled with wet soil and plants. The shelf inside can sit at the bottom or be raised to a higher level, so decide which planting depth you prefer. Ensure the surface underneath tolerates moisture, as water will drain through the base. No tools or fasteners are mentioned for assembly.

Build Integration

The planter works as a freestanding unit on any flat outdoor surface such as a patio, deck or balcony floor. Its acacia construction resists weathering, reducing the need for frequent re-treatment. The adjustable shelf lets you adapt the internal volume for shallow-rooted herbs or deeper-rooted vegetables. Because it is a self-contained box, it frees up ground space and keeps soil separate from surrounding surfaces.

Questions about this item

Does the ASKHOLMEN flower box 905.575.08 include soil, plants or a liner, or must I buy those separately?

The box is sold as the wooden container only. Soil, plants and any protective liner need to be purchased separately.

The shelf inside the ASKHOLMEN 90557508 is adjustable — should I set it low for deep roots or high for shallow displays?

Place the shelf at the bottom when growing vegetables or berries that need deeper soil; raise it for seasonal flowers or arrangements that require less root space.

How does the pre-treated acacia wood of the ASKHOLMEN 905.575.08 hold up outdoors through rain and sun?

The semi-transparent stain protects the dense acacia fibres, so the box resists moisture and UV while keeping the natural wood grain visible on a balcony or terrace.
