Greenfield Threading
High-speed steel straight-flute hand tap cuts 7/16"-20 UNF threads with three flutes and a plug chamfer for through-hole work
This Greenfield Threading straight flute hand tap cuts internal threads to a 7/16"-20 UNF specification. The H11 thread limit and Class 1B fit suit general-purpose threading tasks. Three flutes provide chip clearance during manual operation. It is intended for machinists and maintenance technicians creating new threads or repairing damaged ones.
High speed steel construction resists wear during hand tapping. The black oxide finish reduces friction and helps retain cutting fluid. A 75 percent thread depth engages with a 9.95 mm drill size for proper thread formation. Right-hand cutting direction matches standard fastener orientation.
The plug chamfer design suits through-hole applications and general threading work. Overall length measures 3 1/8 inches with a 1 7/16 inch thread length for reach and control. This tap requires a suitable tap wrench and cutting fluid, neither of which are included. It does not suit bottoming operations or machine tapping without adaptation.

Drill a 9.95 mm hole for 75 percent thread depth, then run the plug-style tap straight with steady pressure; the step most people skip is using cutting fluid to prevent the high-speed steel flutes from loading up.
The black-oxide coating on the high-speed steel flutes wears away with use; once the cutting edges dull or chip, the tap must be replaced because it cannot be economically resharpened.
Heat builds up in the H11-limit flutes during sustained cutting, causing the tap to lose hardness and cut oversize threads before the tool physically breaks.
