Medium-High Gain Distortion

The EarthQuaker Devices Zoar is a discrete transistor-based distortion pedal designed for bass and guitar. It delivers a touch-sensitive, amp-like response across a wide gain range. Silent relay switching with Flexi-Switch technology provides momentary or latching operation without mechanical noise. The circuit uses no opamps or diodes for its core distortion character.

Passive Three-Band EQ Constraints

Tone shaping relies on a passive bass, middle, and treble control stack that interacts with the gain and weight knobs. Because the EQ is passive, it can only cut frequencies rather than boost them, limiting extreme tonal reshaping. The weight control alters the distortion texture and feel, making the EQ response dependent on gain staging and pickup output.

Gain Range and Headroom

The gain knob spans from edge-of-breakup overdrive to heavy saturated fuzz suitable for drop-tuned instruments. At lower settings it retains note definition and sparkle; at maximum it produces thick, grinding saturation. Headroom is set by the discrete transistor design, so very high-output active pickups may push the front end harder than intended, while low-output pickups stay well within the clean-to-crunch transition zone.
